Children’s TV ads loaded with junk food

November 13, 2008 · No Comments

Read this MSNBC article:

In a child’s buffet of food commercials, more than 40 percent of the dishes are candy, snacks and fast food. Nowhere to be found: fresh fruit, vegetables, poultry or seafood.

For years, health officials have warned that kids were being inundated with commercials about not-so-healthy foods. Now, researchers have put numbers to those warnings in the largest-ever study of commercials aimed at children.

Overall, the foundation’s researchers monitored 13 television networks. The viewing took place primarily between late May and early September 2005. They saw 2,613 ads featuring food and drinks that targeted children and teens.

Children ages 8-12 see the most food ads on TV — an average of 21 a day, or 7,600 a year. Teenagers see slightly fewer — 17 a day, or about 6,000 a year; and children ages 2-7 see the fewest — 12 a day or 4,400 a year.

“Since (preteens) are at an age where they’re just becoming independent consumers, understanding what type of advertising they are exposed to is especially important,” Rideout said.

Of food ads that targeted children, 34 percent were for candy and snacks, 29 percent for cereal, 10 percent for beverages, 10 percent for fast food, 4 percent for dairy products, 4 percent for prepared food and the rest for breads and pastries and dine-in restaurants.

In December 2005, the Institute of Medicine concluded that marketing practices from the food and beverage industry are out of balance with recommended diets for children and contribute to an environment that puts children’s health at risk.

The institute recommended that companies shift their advertising to emphasize food and drink that are substantially lower in calories, fats, salt and sugars.

In November, 10 major food and drink makers, including companies such as McDonald’s, The Coca-Cola Co. and PepsiCo Inc., agreed to adopt new voluntary rules for advertising. The companies said they would devote at least half their advertising directed to children to promote healthier diets and lifestyles.

My opinion:

This article gives information and spectacular results on children’s TV ads.

Effectively, children’s watching TV and “eat” junks food TV ads every day. It’s really problems.

Now, it’s important to move for health customer.

But, I think government have important role for the health customer. He should require the food companies to give information on yours product.

GOVERNMENT ACTION:

Government should promote more and more good food in TV ads. He should explain the benefit for the health when the customer eating good food (e.g.: fresh fruit, vegetables)

He gives more rules for food ads.

Look this TV ad :

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x49xhu_coca-cola-recycle-bottle_ads

When the brand make TV ad, she gives the best picture for yours company.

This video gives a best advantage:  the coca cola company recycle yours bottle.

Now, sustainable development, environment protections are very important for customer.

So many companies include in yours TV ads this argument for to give good picture for theirs products. .

I think, now with many problems that world meting for environment protection, it’s very good initiative to include this argument in TV ad.

Pepsi VS Coca Cola

November 11, 2008 · No Comments

I give this TV ad because she compared two brands.

Comparative advertising is an advertisement where the product is being promoted compared with a product of competition.

In French country, she is authorised since13 February 1991 (in TV) when the comparative advertising is honest. It should not mislead the consumer and comparison must be objective.

In French country, this ad method is very dangerous (strict law).Very little advertising company used comparative advertising.

I think this method is vey good for competition between differents brands and I don’t understand why French company doesn’t use this method.
